Autofib Redshift Survey: II – The Evolution of the Galaxy Luminosity Function by Spectral Type
نویسندگان
چکیده
We determine the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) as a function of spectral type using the Autofib redshift survey, a compendium of over 1700 galaxy redshifts in various magnitude-limited samples spanning bJ=11.5–24.0. To carry out this analysis we have developed a cross-correlation technique which classifies faint galaxy spectra into one of six types based on local galaxy templates. Tests and simulations show that this technique yields classifications correct to within one type for more than 90% of the galaxies in our sample. We have also developed extensions of the step-wise maximum likelihood method and the STY parametric method for estimating LFs which are applicable to recovering an evolving LF from multiple samples. We compare these methods to the standard 1/Vmax method used in Paper I. Applying these spectral classifications and LF estimators to the Autofib sample, we find that: (i) The spectra and LF of E/S0 galaxies show no appreciable evolution out to at least z∼0.5. (ii) Early-type spirals show modest evolution, characterised by a gradual steepening of the faint end of their LF with redshift. (iii) Out to z∼0.5, the overall evolution of the galaxy population is dominated by changes seen in late-type spirals. The characteristic luminosity (L∗) of these galaxies appears to brighten with redshift and there are signs of strong density evolution (a rapid increase in φ∗). These effects appear to be luminosity dependent so that the LF steepens at higher redshift. These trends are accompanied by a steep increase in the median [OII] equivalent width, implying a rapid increase in the star-formation rate with redshift at fixed luminosity—a given star-formation rate is found at higher redshift in galaxies of higher luminosity. We find that these conclusions are robust with respect to spectral classification errors and the luminosity function estimator. Finally, we briefly discuss the correlations between our ground-based dataset and a subset of 60 galaxies for which WFPC-2 images are now available from Hubble Space Telescope.

A complete sample of 659 field galaxies with 17.0<U≤21.1, each with U-B-VR-I7500-I8600 photometry, has been selected from a deep field survey which covers 0.83 deg2 along six lines of sight (Hall et al. 1996a). Each galaxy’s spectral type and redshift has been estimated using a multicolor photometric technique (Liu & Green 1998). Total number counts of the galaxies in the U-band give a count sl...
متن کاملLas Campanas Redshift Survey Results: the 3d Power Spectrumand the Luminosity Function
Some recent results on the galaxy 3D power spectrum and the luminosity function derived from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) are discussed. We will present the LCRS power spectrum, compare it against results from other local redshift surveys, and use it to constrain a number of cold dark matter structure formation models. Then we will proceed to describe the LCRS luminosity function, as...
متن کاملDensity-Dependent Luminosity Functions for Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey
Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey are classified according to their spectra, and the resulting spectral types are analyzed to determine if local environment affects their properties. We find that the luminosity function of early-type objects varies as a function of local density. Our results suggest that early-type galaxies (presumably ellipticals and S0’s) are, on average, fainter w...

The sample of 1157 radio-identified galaxies from the Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS) (Machalski & Condon 1999) is used to derive the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of both star-forming (starburst) galaxies with the mean redshift 〈z〉 ≈ 0.07, and AGN-type ones with 〈z〉 ≈ 0.18. These functions are used as a direct measure of their evolution inferred from the evolutionary models of the entire po...
